Wellow Group of the RDA is based at the Wellow Trekking Centre, Wellow near Bath where we have been for over 25 years.  We have an indoor school with a hoist; office; classroom and disabled toilet facilities.

Our Group Instructor is Anne Allen who has been involved with RDA Groups for over 30 years.  In 2011 Anne won the RDA Presidents Award for outstanding service.

We employ two part time grooms/instructors and an apprentice, to help prepare the horses and ponies for their lessons, keep the tack clean and help with the rides.  Otherwise our helpers, and the Group Instructor, are volunteers.

We hold sessions in term time on Monday to Friday, (excluding Wednesday) catering for over 100 riders with ages ranging from preschool to pensioner.

We take riders for hacks along a disused railway line and can offer side saddle riding for those riders who are unable to abduct their hips.

What We Do

The Wellow RDA Group is relaxed and very friendly. Our volunteers meet other like-minded people, who get huge satisfaction from their interaction with the riders and horses and enjoy various social events, as well as trying to ensure that our riders do likewise. Our organisation needs a large number of people prepared to give up their time to a regular weekly term-time commitment.

Here at Wellow RDA we own Dolly, a 14.2hh piebald mare, and Bob, a 15hh skewbald Irish cob.

We are privileged to be able to borrow Chelsea Girl, a skewbald Shetland, for some events.

All other horses and ponies that we use are owned by, or are on loan to, the Wellow Trekking Centre

We contribute financially to their up-keep.

Each session consists of groups of 4 to 6 riders with helpers leading the horses and acting as side helpers.

Activities include putting bean bags in buckets and bending in and out of coloured poles.

We also play games, and prepare riders for dressage tests, musical rides and Country Challenge classes.
